Digitized Collection of Jewish Records is a searchable database of digital copies of various archival and other documentary sources relating to the pre-Holocaust Jewish population of Eastern Galicia.

The core of the database is the digital collection of about 5000 Jewish vital, communal, organizational, legal, immigration, school, and other categories of records of genealogical, historical and memorial value, most of them handwritten. They stem from the area of the former Austrian (subsequently Polish) province of Eastern Galicia, including Lvov, Stanislawow, and Tarnopol provinces, spanning years from the mid -19th century to the late 30th of the 20th century.

Records listing in our database were inventoried, catalogued, digitized, translated into English, and entered in the web site. The database is actually the inventory of English language translations of these records, assorted in alphabetical order and searchable on – line by surnames. The search engine is designed to make the search easy.

Our immediate objective is to locate and copy more Jewish records, including those hidden in private hands, and to add more entries to the database.

They are Records of the Vanished World - the Holocaust in Eastern Galicia not only wiped out its 550,000-member Jewish community, but destroyed forever the unique Jewish civilization that had flourished here for several centuries.

For most of this area it is very rare to find ghetto, deportation or execution lists. Many Jews were annihilated without a trace and their names will hardly ever be known. Our further objective is to contribute to the reconstruction of the pre -Holocaust Jewish population of Eastern Galicia by using various open peacetime sources. By reconstructing their names, we hope to bring anonymous Holocaust victims back from anonymity and assist our web site visitors in researching their Jewish ancestry or lost family members.
